It is the Age of Enlightenment -- of new and magical political movements, from the necromancer Robespierre calling for revolution in France, to the weather mage Toussaint L'Ouverture leading the slaves of Haiti in their fight for freedom, to the bold new Prime Minister William Pitt weighing the legalization of magic amongst commoners in Britain and abolition throughout its colonies overseas.
But amidst all of the upheaval of the early modern world, there is an unknown force inciting all of human civilization into violent conflict. And it will require the combined efforts of revolutionaries, magicians, and abolitionists to unmask this hidden enemy before the whole world falls to darkness and chaos.
This is one that has been on my tbr since I read Teh Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep by this author two years ago and I definitely should have read this earlier because even though it wasn't anything like The Unlikely Escape I still enjoyed it so much.
I loved the characters a lot and reading hiw they changed over the years was interesting and so fun and wasn't anything like I expected it to be. I also loved the magical aspect and the magical world, I didn't expect their to be vampires in it so that was a pleasant surprise as I love reading about vampires.
It did take me a while to get into and I do wish we had more scenes and longer scenes with Fina who was a slave in the book especially because abolition was a massive plot point and I feel like it should have focused more on her.
